Northern Flyway

Northern Flyway is a large scale, ambitious 75 minute music and visual production devised by Jenny Sturgeon and Inge Thomson.

Humans have always looked to the birds. In mythology, they are carriers of souls, messengers to the gods, our familiars. In ecology, they are our measure, our meter, they mark the seasons. In this new body of work, Jenny and Inge seek to explore the nature and rhythms, birdsong, myths and movements of man’s winged companion. The work will incorporate birdsong, vocal and instrumental mimesis and new lyrical material as well as a lush visual skyscape of flocks, skeins and murmurations. Due to the current socio-political temperature, the themes of migration are topical - comparisons can be drawn between the geographical movements of birds and humans, resulting in a powerful and resonating new work.

Jenny - harmonium, vocals

Inge - accordion, electronics, vocals

Sarah Hayes - flute, keys

Jason Singh - electronics, mimesis

Magnus Robb - viola, sampling

Projection, set design and lighting will be curated by Simon Gane and Ben Everett.

Stage wear will be designed and created by textile artist Neila Nell. Northern Flyway will be set against a landscape of bird images to create an intense visceral audio-visual experience. This is an innovative and exciting new project.

Northern Flyway will premiere at The Barn, Banchory, Aberdeenshire on Saturday 20 January 2018.

It will then be at The Tron Theatre, Glasgow on 28 and 29 January as part of Celtic Connections and then on to Mareel, Shetland on February 10th

We are Immensely grateful to Creative Scotland and The Barn for their support of Northern Flyway.
